A thousand acres is equivalent to 1.56 square miles or 43,560,000 square feet.

It’s a lot of land. You can fit 751 American football fields into it. But, it’s usually used for ranching or farming.

It can mean freedom, for horses to run wild and free. It can also mean bondage for a family tied to it, like what happened to the Cook family in the 1992 Pulitzer Prize-winning A Thousand Acres written by Jane Smiley.

A Thousand Acres – The 1992 Pulitzer Prize Winner

The novel is a modernized version of Shakespeare’s King Lear set on a thousand acre farm in Iowa owned by a family of a father and his three daughters.

The father, Larry Cook, grew immensely wealthy, bringing his farm to a thousand acres, through his clever manipulation of the less able farmers around him.

One day, he decides to retire and incorporate his farm, handing over complete and joint ownership and management to his 3 daughters, Ginny, Rose, and Caroline. The two eldest daughters, Ginny and Rose, agree, but Caroline does not, believing it’s a bad idea. So, she leaves the farm to become a successful lawyer. Larry removes her from the incorporation and disinherits her.

This sets off a chain of events that reveals the buried darknesses, conflicts, and long-suppressed emotions within the family, as the story unfolds to reveal the long-term sexual abuse of the 2 older daughters by their father since their mother died in their youth.

The story also focuses on Ginny, the narrator, and her troubled marriage, her difficulties in conceiving a child, her relationship with her family, how she yearns to break free from it all, and finally does.

A Thousand Acres also won the National Book Critics Award for fiction in 1991, was set to a film of the same title in 1997, and premiered as an opera by the Des Moines Metro Opera in its 2022 season.
