The average car length and width has been increasing in recent years, and it’s something that many people don’t consider when purchasing a new vehicle.
In this article, we’ll show you the dimensions of some of the most common vehicles in each class sold today.
Car Dimensions are Important to Know
Your choice when deciding the make and model of your vehicle, especially the class type, such as a compact car vs a full-size SUV can impact things like whether you’ll be able to use your single-car garage for storing your vehicle or for extra storage.
This might not apply to multi-vehicle garages, but a one-car garage built 20+ years ago will likely be a concern for many owners with newer model cars.
When I purchased my vehicle, I knew it wouldn’t fit in my garage. I was ok with that at the time. There are definitely times I think my next vehicle should be one that will. Here’s why…
Parking garages and even fast food drive-throughs almost always have height restrictions. That big brightly painted metal bar warns you that your vehicle will sustain damage if you try and squeeze somewhere you won’t fit.
Common Parking Spot Size

The United States has a requirement for parking spaces to have minimum dimensions of 9 feet wide and 18 feet long. Taking into account that a vehicle 6 feet wide would only leave 18 inches on each side, that could be a tight squeeze when parking next to a wall or pillar.
When parking next to another vehicle, considering everyone parked correctly, that leaves 3 full feet when exiting and entering their vehicles.
