Minions are the mascot characters of the entire Despicable Me franchise, as well as Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures, and it’s no surprise that they stole the spotlight from Gru.
With their yellow cylindrical bodies and their own language, they’ve become a hit with children and adults alike. But how tall is a minion really? After all, Minions come in all shapes and sizes, with one or two eyes.
They do appear in different heights and builds, so there may be no definitive answer. But that doesn’t mean we can’t try and define just how tall a Minion really is.
What Is Despicable Me?
Despicable Me is a movie franchise that started with the eponymous movie in 2010 and has since then had two main sequels with a fourth movie set to be released in 2024. There have been two prequel movies that have included Minions, and Minions: The Rise of Gru.
Since it first came out in 2010, there have been fifteen short films released based on the franchise. In fact, there was a television special that compiled four of these short films into a half-hour show.
They even have a digital series of 2D animation videos that consisted of roughly forty episodes which began in 2021 and became a Saturday Morning cartoon based on the Minions’ adventures.
In 2010, there was a video game adaptation of Despicable Me (see also our article on Funko Pop Box) released onto mainline consoles, and since then, there have been a variety of games released on smartphones and tablets.
The video game adaptation was not the only adaptation, as junior novels were released for children, and several companion books.
The popularity of Despicable Me has grown so much that they even have theme park attractions, and you can go on the Despicable Me Minion Mayhem ride at Universal Studios Florida.
A few years later, they even released a similar attraction with a Japanese cast at Universal Studios Japan in 2017.
What Is A Minion?
It’s no surprise that the Minions have become so popular with adults and children alike. They’re the yellow cylindrical creatures that have overalls and goggles. They have their own language and are known to chase after the most despicable beings in the world to serve them.
In the Despicable Me universe, they are billions of years old and are the reason Napoleon Bonaparte dies. As far as we know, Minions are immortal and can survive in space, thus, are incredibly terrifying.
Or, they would be incredibly terrifying, if they weren’t the main comic relief of the Despicable Me franchise. Their childlike size is accurate for them, as they are childish in nature.
Despite their impulsive nature, Minions are strangely innocent, which contradicts their mission in life to find the most despicable person in the world to follow them.
As a whole, they also have general human names and are known to get along famously well with Gru, who appears to know each of his Minions by name and often thanks them for their hard work.
How Tall Is A Minion?
According to Wikipedia, a Minion is roughly around 3.5 feet tall. This makes sense because a child is roughly around the same height as a Minion.
However, this is only the average height, as according to Despicable Me 2, there are over 10,400 Minions that exist in the Despicable Me universe. However, the height of a Minion has only led to more questions.
How Tall Is Gru?
When researching the height of Minions, it came to my attention that Felonius Gru, the fifty-year-old protagonist of the Despicable Me franchise is roughly a little under fourteen feet tall. Which makes him far taller than even the tallest person in the world.
Yet somehow, he is still not the tallest person in the Despicable Me franchise. In fact, his wife, Lucy, who he met in Despicable Me 2, is even taller than him and is presumed to be around fifteen feet tall. However, I do question this.
On average, Gru is around the same size as three and a half average-sized Minions. Many people have claimed that Gru is the size of four stacked Minions, but this doesn’t seem accurate.
In fact, using this knowledge, Gru would actually be closer to twelve feet tall than fourteen, if we judged him by the height of three and a half minions.
In this case, I would say that Gru is twelve feet tall, while his wife Lucy would be around thirteen feet tall.
How Tall Are Gru’s Daughters?
Gru has three daughters that he adopted in the first film. These are Margo, Edith, and Agnes. Agnes is the youngest and is around four feet tall, and is only a little bit taller than the Minions.
However, Margo comes up to Gru’s waist and due to the belief that Gru is fourteen feet instead of twelve, assumed she was around seven feet tall. This, however, is inaccurate, and I would say that Margo is instead six feet tall.
While still tall for a child, it would not be too out of the realm of possibility in the world of Despicable Me.

Final Thoughts
The world of Despicable Me is admittedly very strange, and the Minions definitely steal the show. Over the years, Despicable Me merchandise has focused on Minions for their small and childlike appearance and their easy yellow cylindrical design.
Their language serves as a comedic effect, and it’s no wonder that they’re more popular considering the horrific height of so many of the main characters in the franchise.
Now that you’ve read this article, you should be able to have a better understanding of Gru and the Minions’ heights. The heights of the Minions have all but been confirmed, and the height of Gru is a contentious debate in the Despicable Me fandom.
